Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Youth and Tobacco Control Policies

Audience:

Youth and tobacco control specialist working with youth on tobacco control initiatives will benefit from this presentation focusing on ways youth can help further coalition policy work, building capacity among youth groups, and implementing new activities with the anti-tobacco industry message.

Key Points:

This presentation will focus on ways to incorporate youth when planning strategies such as local and voluntary smoke free air campaigns within communities and school districts.   Youth have a great platform where key leaders and elected officials will listen to them and can be great assets in passing policies and examples will be shared on how this was successful.  Other strategies will be discussed where local VOICE youth have been able to implement peer to peer education/activities on how tobacco companies still target children with their message.  Research shows peer to peer education can be more powerful then learning from a curriculum.

Educational Experience:

This presentation will focus on the relationship that has been built over the last 10 years between high school youth working in the VOICE anti-tobacco company movement and tobacco control coordinators in Indiana.  It will include a panel discussion, with examples of sample strategies.  Networking will be encouraged among audience members to share their experiences as well.

Benefits:

Participants will be learning new and innovative ways to work with youth on tobacco prevention issues.  This workshop will provide some new, innovative ways to direct youth’s passion for tobacco control and ways to communicate the anti-industry message.
