Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Increasing Diversity/Eliminating Disparities and Tobacco Control Movement – Skills Building

Audience: Those interested in provider continuing education/training, hospital-based tobacco treatment, or web-based training. • Key Points: The Kentucky Cancer Program (KCP) at the University of Louisville has provided a free video-based training online, reaching more providers more easily, with extremely positive results. While hospitals have been considered possibly the best place to intervene with smokers, few web-based continuing education (CE) programs have targeted training to the bedside caregivers. Based on feedback from prior trainings and results from a pilot project with three hospitals, the KCP developed a web-based CE offering (up to 1.5 hrs of CE credit), receiving outstanding response. This course appears to be the only one of its kind focusing on hospital clinicians (nurses, respiratory therapists, physicians, and pharmacists), featuring interviews with various disciplines as well as demonstrations of how the team approach may be done while following the Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence-2008 Update Clinical Practice Guideline recommendations. This course is the first web-based offering to receive CE approval by the KY Board of Pharmacy and has been particularly successful in reaching respiratory therapists. Participation continues to grow as key partnerships are utilized to increase awareness of its availability. • Educational Experience: The poster presentation would include images from the web offering, a summary of the training’s development, examples of promotional pieces, and most importantly, the results from pre- and post-tests as well as evaluations completed by participants to date. • Benefits: Important considerations for using this medium to provide training and lessons learned for future offerings will be discussed.
