Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. Participants will be able to identify three up-to-date best practices when advancing smokefree policies for casinos or gaming venues. Participants will be able to describe three key strategies to build power for long-term success in smokefree casino campaigns.

Audience: Organizations and individuals desiring to protect all workers from the dangers of secondhand smoke including those working in gaming and gambling venues will benefit from this National, Global and Tribal perspective of Best Practices and Lessons Learned.

Key Points: It is no longer the norm to leave casino workers out of the smokefree worksite movement.  By utilizing best practices and lessons learned and by highlighting recent developments in the Global, National and Tribal smokefree gaming movement, participants will learn tips, strategies and examples of what works and what doesn’t work for transitioning toward smokefree casinos and gambling venues.

Educational Experience: Experts with over 30 years of tobacco control experience will engage participants in an overview and interactive dialogue of the smokefree casinos movement.  Participants will learn about the messaging and tactics used by the casino industry and how to counter these tactics and build local, global and tribal support for smokefree casinos.

Benefits: With the goal of making a lasting change in the attitudes and beliefs around smokefree casinos and gaming venues, the campaign waged to make casinos and gambling venues smokefree is the best educational tool to increase the public and the casino management’s (&/or decision-makers’) awareness of the dangers of smoking in casinos.  Participants will learn ways to incrementally elevate the demand for smokefree air and ultimately help make it easy for the decision-makers to say “YES” to smokefree casinos and gambling.
