  1. understand how to leverage local and national resources to implement tobacco-free campus policies

Audience: Groups implementing public health policy

Key Points: The Austin Mayors’ Fitness Council has integrated the national CEO Gold Standard on Cancer Certification as part of its own certification process for Austin employers. The CEO Gold Standard requires 100% tobacco-free campus policy. These 100% tobacco-free campus policies must prohibit any tobacco use (including cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco) on all campus property, indoors and outdoors, including parking areas. Several local employers have already been certified, including Seton Family of Hospitals, Dell Computers, Austin/Travis County Integral Care, LIVEStrong, and the regional office of the American Cancer Society. Some worksite have documented declines in tobacco use rates among employees. The Mayor’s Fitness Council continues to promote worksite policy change through this certification process. Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services has provided technical assistance to both the Mayor’s Fitness Council and employers seeking these policy changes.

Educational Experience: This presentation will highlight the policy development process, discuss methods for policy enforcement, and describe evaluation of the policy effectiveness.

Benefits: The audience will understand how to leverage local and national resources to implement tobacco-free campus policies.
