Audience:

State and local health department and tobacco control groups that are developing online communities for stakeholders and consumers to get information, resources and support related to quitting and preventing tobacco use.

Key Points:

With 140,000+ Facebook followers, Tobacco Free Florida is managing one of the largest social media communities in tobacco control. In late 2010, Tobacco Free Florida repositioned the campaign’s social media networks – Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube –to not only reach a more targeted audience, but to also greatly enhance engagement and advance the campaign’s messages using dynamic, multi-dimensional online conversations that are unattainable with traditional media.

Messaging on social media not only informs the campaign’s followers and fans but also equips these audiences with information with which they are able to inform their followers and fans on tobacco cessation, guide youth tobacco prevention, and advance information regarding secondhand smoke.

Educational Experience:

Attendees will learn key strategies and tactics to increase the amount of dialogue and conversation on these platforms, track conversations, and implementing innovative new elements.  A key learning will also be managing a large and diverse audience including mitigating disruptive comments and critics.

Benefits:

While establishing a social media presence in today’s communications environment is critical, in a complex environment like tobacco control, managing the conversation and ensuring that followers are provided with valuable and reliable information and resources is paramount.  This session will provide tangible steps to achieve that goal.
