Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. learn how web based assessment tools are being used by hospitals to assess and upgrade their tobacco related policies related to staff and patients in two states and one large city
  2. understand how hospital associations, non-profits and Health Departments are working to support the upgraded cessation services in hospitals by using these web based assessments.
  3. gain information on how the CDC is supporting the development of this tool into a nationwide strategy to promote systems change.

Audience:

Hospital administrators, non-profits and state and local health departments will benefit from this panel.

Key Points:

Hospitals can and should promote a healthy workforce and should treat all tobacco users. Declines in employee smoking at hospitals have proven return on investment and can promote better patient care. Many hospitals have outdated smoke-free policies, ineffective signage, and policies that are not enforced. Using this evidence-based assessment system allows hospitals to assess current policies and to identify ways to improve upon them.

Educational Experience:

Attendees will learn…

  • How the web based assessment tool is being used at hospitals in two states and one large city
  • How hospital associations, non-profits and Health Departments are working to support the upgraded cessation services in hospitals
  • How the CDC is supporting the development of this tool into a nationwide strategy to promote systems change.

Benefits:

The audience will review the tool and understand importance of system wide assessment to evaluate and upgrade worksite wellness policies related to tobacco and will understand how the tool is being adapted by other states and municipalities.
