Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Tobacco Control Movement – Skills Building and Communications and Media

Audience:

This program targets individuals working in state or local tobacco programs and tobacco control advocates involved in the development of media and communications campaigns.

Key Points:

The Wisconsin Tobacco Prevention and Control Program’s (TPCP) Sustainability Campaign is an ongoing media effort that has been in place since 2003. The Campaign uses earned media to promote tobacco program sustainability and awareness.  It communicates the need for the TPCP to key internal and external audiences and integrates sustainability messaging in all TPCP communications. A critical infrastructure support is the operation of its statewide communications committee, comprised of communications experts from state partner organizations and representatives from local coalitions and networks. Campaign framing and messaging is regularly modified and updated so that it reflects and is relevant to the environment.  Through the efforts of the TPCP and the broader communications network, there is now an extensive communications infrastructure in place and robust media advocacy capacity among local tobacco prevention and control partners.  Key points in this presentation include components for a comprehensive communications strategy, methods for effective framing and messaging, and ways to make a compelling case for sustaining effective tobacco programs.
