Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Communications and Media

Audience: Individuals at all levels of experience working with youth

Key Points: The “Team Up! Tell A Friend” initiative, uses middle school aged youth to provide positive tobacco prevention messages to their peers in middle schools, community centers and youth serving organizations. These youth from a variety of cultures offer a view of tobacco through a series of portraits, posters and bookmarks that young people and adults can identify with.

This project has been replicated in both urban and rural schools as well as various community centers.  The “Team Up! Tell a Friend.” project  has experienced great success and interest from the youth, parents, school personnel and the public, as indicated by the positive feedback received and the multitude of youth wanting to be involved in the project.

Educational Experience: A handout on implementing the project and bookmarks used as examples will be provided to each interested participant viewing the poster.

Benefits: This project utilizes youth from their respective communities which is intended to draw viewers to the message and give the message credibility. When viewers see people they recognize sharing the education and awareness message, they may pay more attention and may be more inclined to incorporate the message into their own lives.
