Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Tobacco Regulation and Communications and Media

Audience: All attendees

Key Points: The passage of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act has changed the face of tobacco control work even during its short lifetime.  The tobacco control community must now learn about and navigate in a new landscape that few have familiarity:  the federal regulatory process.   Most tobacco control practitioners and advocates are ill prepared on knowing how to best interact with the FDA.  This workshop is intended to demystify FDA regulatory processes and assist participants with the tools they need to provide the most relevant information to the FDA as it makes its decisions in implementing the Tobacco Control Act.

Educational Experience: This session will focus on a range of ways local practitioners and advocates can get their voices heard in the era of tobacco control regulation.   Topics will cover (1) methods for collecting and messaging community level data results to the FDA, (2) the importance of and need to frame narrative community stories, and an (3) overview of the FDA regulatory process.

Benefits: A range of tips and tools on how to submit comments and encourage public feedback will be discussed.   Presenters will conduct exercises on appropriate use of data sources, messaging, and being proactive with respect to agenda setting.
