Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. Assess readiness for beginning efforts to achieve tobacco free grounds at the local level.
  2. Explain the process for demonstrating the need for a tobacco free grounds policy at presentations at a school board or community coalition meeting or in a town hall session
  3. Demonstrate presentation skills with youth acting as primary presenters and partners in the effort.

Audience:

All levels of tobacco control advocates who want to empower youth and community leaders by developing and implementing a plan to achieve tobacco free grounds with primary assistance of local youth groups.

Key Points:

Kansas tobacco advocates will demonstrate the process they have successfully used to assess the need for tobacco free grounds policies, to develop a plan that outlines the educational and media strategies needed to promote such policy changes, and to involve youth immediately in the process so that their voices can be heard and their passion for prevention can be channeled into effective change policies.

Educational Experience:

Kansas partners in this effort have worked within a networking sequence that shares successes and challenges across the state in working to achieve tobacco free grounds policies at the local level. This group of presenters has been actively involved in the process as community and youth leaders.  They have become experts in achieving their goals and presenting their methods. The audience will gain an understanding of the assessment and planning tools needed to move a tobacco free grounds initiative forward.

Benefits:

This workshop will provide an outline of the winning process Kansans have used to adopt tobacco free grounds, particularly for school districts.  There will be explanations of methods of engaging youth in this process in order to develop winning messages and mobilizing concerned citizens in the efforts.  Options for meeting challenges will be offered. Examples of planning materials and communication and media efforts will be provided to the attendees.
