Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. Outline a variety of tools and traditional "shoe leather" techniques for gathering current first hand information on the tobacco industry and its allies from the industry perspective

Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Communications and Media

Audience: All attendees

Key Points: In spite of increasing regulatory and legislative restrictions on cigarette use and promotion, the tobacco industry remains a dynamic, resilient, and highly profitable business.

The nations's largest cigarette manufacturer, Altria (parent company of Philip Morris USA), which supported regulation of tobacco products by the Food and Drug Administration, now portrays itself as a proponent of tobacco 'harm reduction'  and a prominent funder of scientific research on smoking and health.

Educational Experience: This illustrated presentation reflects the author's 35 years of monitoring the most successful global tobacco company, Philip Morris, maker of the world's leading cigarette brand, Marlboro. The modern history of Marlboro advertising and promotion, sponsorship of sports and the arts, ethnic marketing, and ties to mass media corporations, chain drug stores, universities, and humanitarian causes will be reviewed.

Benefits: Attendees will be able to separate myth from reality in addressing Philip Morris. They will also be more cognizant of impediments and miseducation within the health community in regard to counteracting the influence of the tobacco industry.
