Audience:

General NCTOH attendees.  No particular expertise is required, as this is geared towards those who are not expert in addiction.

Key Points:

This breakout group will give an overview of three main areas of tobacco addiction for non-experts. The first area, biology of nicotine addiction, will include such topics as where and how nicotine acts on the brain, brain chemistry underlying addiction (dopamine and beyond), and issues related to susceptibility (epigenetics, genetics, environment).  The second area, prevention of tobacco addiction, will discuss what works and what doesn’t, focusing on science-based strategies.  The third area, treatment of tobacco addiction, will include both behavioral approaches and pharmacotherapies.  In all of these areas, differences between youth and adults will be discussed, from biological responses to prevention strategies to the most effective treatments.

Educational Experience: This breakout group will provide a basic foundation, touching upon the three main addiction concepts: biology, prevention and cessation.

Benefits:

After this session, attendees will be better able to understand more in-depth presentations and seminars throughout the conference.
