Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. Understand some of the key initiation factors that lead young people to use tobacco.
  2. Identify initiatives that are working with the non-college population on tobacco cessation.
  3. Describe why it is important to bring cessation options to places where young people spend their time (i.e. online, bars, clubs).

Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Communications and Media and Cessation

Audience: Anyone who works with youth/young adults or wants to understand more about what makes young people start using tobacco and/or about creative strategies that are being used to help young people to stop using tobacco.

Key Points: Young people are unique and there are specific initiation factors that lead them to begin using tobacco.  There are proven cessation techniques that tend to work best with the youth population that will be highlighted during this session.

Educational Experience: Attendees will learn about creative initiatives across the country that are being employed to help young people stop using tobacco. Because these outreach methods are different than most methods across the country, and because young adults may be considered a hard to reach demographic, this session will teach participants what has worked in the field.

Benefits: This panel will be focused on providing real examples that participants can tap into when they return home.
