  3. Describe key factors influencing tobacco use prevalence

Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Communications and Media and Tobacco Control Policies

Audience: All conference attendees

Key Points: The Office on Smoking and Health convened an expert panel in 2011 representing the many facets of the tobacco control community – researchers, partners, state and local tobacco control programs, and Federal government – to discuss ideas for accelerating the decline in youth, young adult and adult tobacco use prevalence. The multi-month effort resulted in the development of practical actions to revitalize and re-energize the tobacco control movement, to assure coordination and consistency in tobacco control messaging, to engage critical audiences in efforts to move the needle on tobacco-related disparities, and to capitalize on opportunities afforded by FDA regulation.

Educational Experience:

The proposed plenary will highlight the key factors influencing tobacco use prevalence (including both pro-tobacco and anti-tobacco influences), identify high priority strategies for accelerating the decline, and provide an overview of independent and collaborative actions to be taken by the tobacco control community to accelerate declines in tobacco prevalence.

Benefits: Attendees will benefit from hearing from leading experts in tobacco control regarding the overall effort to accelerate the declines in all populations.
