At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. List the similarities and differences between the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Tobacco Retail Compliance Inspection program and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Synar program.
  2. Describe the relationship and potential points of coordination between the FDA’s Tobacco Retail Compliance Inspection program and SAMHSA’s Synar program.
  3. Identify examples of how two States are coordinating FDA, Synar, State and local level enforcement of retail tobacco laws, including lessons learned.

Audience:

The audience for this workshop is State and local governmental entities, State and local non-profit entities, and other individuals interested in the enforcement of youth access and advertising restrictions in the retail environment at the Federal, State and local levels.

Key Points:

This workshop will address the similarities, differences, and potential points of coordination between the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Tobacco Retail Compliance Inspection program and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Synar program. The workshop will also provide participants an example of how a state entity has coordinated FDA, Synar, and State and local enforcement of retail tobacco laws in an effort to meet Federal regulatory requirements from both FDA and SAMHSA and increase the reach of enforcement efforts in a cost-efficient manner.

Educational Experience:

While the format of this workshop is a panel, there will be ample opportunity for audience members to dialogue with the panel members and each other about enforcement challenges they are facing in their own States and localities and to share solutions.
