Audience: Tobacco Treatment Specialists, health care providers, and administrators of cessation programs

Key Points: The first talk will briefly review evidence that smokers who are not currently interested in quitting can reduce their cigs/day over long periods and that such reduction increases the probability of quitting, and whether in smokers trying to quit gradual cessation is as effective as abrupt cessation.  It will also give examples of incorporating reduction in primary care and health organizations.  The second talk will briefly describe the components of motivational interviewing and the evidence on whether it is effective for smoking cessation.  It will also discuss how to implement this treatment without sacrificing fidelity.  The third talk will briefly describe how mobile- and internet-based technologies can be leveraged to deliver evidence-based cessation support directly to tobacco users interested in quitting..  It will also discuss the evidence of their effectiveness and showcase some programs.

Educational Experience: Three brief presentations (45 min total) followed by comments question to panel of presenters on any new treatment (30 min)

Benefits: Attendees will be able to decide whether to integrate reduction, motivational interviewing or mobile- and internet-based treatments into their tobacco control programs and will learn tips for implementation of these programs.
