At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. 1. Participants will be able to list new techniques to assess tobacco use, deliver effective smoking cessation advice and referrals in a non-judgmental manner. 2. Participants will be able to effectively explain the 2As & R brief intervention skills and knowledge to train coworkers. 3. Participants will be able to describe how to encourage health care providers about the utilization of brief intervention for smoking cessation.

Audience: o This presentation will assist health educators, social workers, perinatal specialists and medical professionals. • Key Points: o The Multi-disciplinary Approach to Tobacco Cessation Workshop is designed to offer knowledge, resources and support to the participants. During the workshop, current information on: how tobacco use as the leading cause of preventable death, diabetes and smoking, smoking risks in pregnancy, the hazards of secondhand smoke and understanding nicotine addiction will be discussed. The workshop will guide the participants in using the Brief Intervention program: Ask, Advise and Refer (2A’s & R) to assist any client population to becoming tobacco free. o The 2A’s & R heightens the participant’s knowledge and compassion about nicotine addiction. It prepares participants to effectively discuss the risks of smoking and second-hand smoke with their clients. The goal of the program is to build upon the relationship between the care provider and patient to better assess the smoker’s readiness to quit, willingness to seek more intensive intervention and increase commitment to following through with additional interventions. These resources for New Jersey are; MQC, cessation for pregnant and/or parenting mom’s and NJ Quit Line • Educational Experience: o This program is geared toward professionals or volunteers who want to assist decrease the health burdens of tobacco exposure. • Benefits: o By identifying and referring clients to evidence based cessation programs, professionals will aid in reducing the health risks associated with smoking.
