Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  2. Identify the barriers and challenges in building coalition led by the Fulton County Health Department.
  3. Demonstrate the success factors in community involvement, innovative partnerships and educational outreach to pass smoke free policies.

Audience:

Public health professionals from state and local agencies including health promotion staff, clinical staff managing non-clinical programs; and key partners collaborating on policy, environmental, or systems change initiatives.

Key Points:

  1. Coalition Building: Identifying and galvanizing community resources for more effective and efficient use through building a smoke free coalition.
  2. Best Practices & Challenges for Coalition Building and Advocacy Campaigns   by working with a variety of non-funded and funded partners.
  3. Developing a framework for coalition collaboration would include leadership support and participation at collaborative meetings.
  4. Proposed Role of the Smoke Free Coalition: The coalition will engage representatives from various sectors throughout the county in collaborative efforts to influence policy, systems, and environmental changes.
  5. Close Georgia 2005 Smoke Free Air Act loopholes to make ALL workplaces smoke-free including Bars and Restaurants, Outdoor eating and serving areas etc.
  6. Gaining the Support of Bar Owners
  7. Key Strategies to Reduce Youth Exposure to Tobacco marketing by developing educational materials and Educate community members and policy makers.
  8. Smoke free air campaign to promote messages that will inform and inspire targetaudiences to take action to pass and implement comprehensive smoke free laws.

Educational Experience:

This experience will afford the participants the opportunity to build a coalition back home, and step by step process towards a smoke free policy implemented either in their city or the county.
