Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. Recognize the benefits of hosting tobacco treatment specialist in a local health department setting to reach disparate populations.
  2. Demonstrate the use of effective tobacco treatment interventions with various population groups including HIV positive, mentally ill, recovering addicts, COPD, and low income.
  3. Explain collaboration strategies to increase capacity for treatment and referral from partnering departments such as Behavioral Health, Primary Care and STD/HIV programs.

Audience:

The target audience includes social workers, counselors, nurses, asthma educators, respiratory therapists, tobacco control managers, hospital administrators, health educators, public health administrators.

Key Points:

Participants will learn the capacity a certified tobacco treatment specialist (CTTS) holds as well as the value of on-site CTTS services.  Through the identification of key players in an organization, tobacco treatment interventions can be successfully incorporated into mental health and substance abuse treatment settings.  Participants will learn how to write integrated and individualized tobacco treatment plans for the disparate population.

Educational Experience:

The presentation will be delivered via a lecture. Speakers will share evidence-based recommendations for tobacco treatment and experiences applying these recommendations in a local health department setting. Speakers will share statistics on client demographics, program utilization and quit rates.

Benefits:

 Participants will be able to write an effective integrative and individualized tobacco treatment plan. Participants will be able to develop a one on one tobacco cessation program. Participants will understand the importance cessation plays in overall abstinence. Participants will be able to apply tobacco treatment interventions that are culturally appropriate and specific to the following disparate groups; HIV +, Latino, African American, low socioeconomic status, and mentally ill.
