Smoke Free Housing Authority of the City of Kokomo, Indiana
Target Audience:
Tobacco Control Policy Professionals, Tobacco Advocates, HUD Housing Directors
Key Points:
Kokomo Housing Authority is the only community in the State of Indiana to have a smoke free policy for housing units. Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of preventable disease in the Unites States, according to the American Lung Association. We know that secondhand smoke travels into units whom may have tenants that are suffering from asthma, diabetes, COPD or other illness which is a deep concern. This presentation will examine the cost savings and benefits for tenants who have become non smokers. You will be able to plan, establish clear policy, amend new leases, and have reasonable time to prepare the policy to current residents and promote the new policy. Language change on a lease form that legally includes the new smoke free policy will be displayed and enforcement concerns will be addressed. By reducing public health risks associated with smoking, the policy will enhance the effectiveness of the Housing Authority efforts to provide increased protection for all residents.
Educational Experience:
Poster will be a self-explanatory display of Key Point data and findings (such as cost analysis, and number of reduced smokers since policy).
Benefits: HUD Housing will design and implement a New Smoke Free Policy and tenants will be protected from Secondhand Smoke.
Learning Objectives: Learn how to plan and implement a smokefree housing authority policy. Learn the language and how to enforce the new policy.
