Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. • Demonstrate how designating a tobacco cessation office champion in a primary care medical practice can result in an increase in the number of patients being asked about their tobacco use and receiving tobacco cessation assistance. • Explain opportunities to collaborate with an Office Champion in a physician practice who can define, implement and standardize a tobacco-free culture and health systems change that integrates healthy lifestyle interventions into daily office routine.

Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Cessation

Audience:

Healthcare professionals, tobacco control advocates, quality improvement project coordinators, researchers, tobacco control program staff, and association management staff

Key Points:

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) recruited 50 family medicine practices for a Tobacco Cessation Office Champions Pilot Project. Each medical practice designated an Office Champion – in most instances a non-physician – who, with evidence-based training, implemented system changes to integrate tobacco cessation activities into daily office routines. In this lecture, presenters will share the results of the project, highlighting success stories, best practices, and innovative team approaches for systems change. The evaluation components included an online evaluation, pre/post chart reviews, assessments, phone interviews and site visits. The AAFP Office Champions practice manual, online training model, and “Ask and Act” tobacco cessation resources will be shared.

Educational Experience:

Content has been developed by faculty experts and staff and delivered by skilled presenters who are highly knowledgeable about the topic area and who are able to provide relevant examples from physician practices. The presenters have been regular attendees at the NCTOH, and they are familiar with the diversity of participants. The session will provide opportunities to engage attendees with effective adult learning models that focus on building the learner’s current knowledge base.

Benefits:

Healthcare professionals and tobacco control advocates will learn about a successful model using tobacco cessation office champions to help patients quit tobacco use.
