Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Increasing Diversity/Eliminating Disparities and Cessation

Audience: This workshop will present information suitable for a wide range of tobacco control advocates, behavioral health providers and anyone interested in learning more about ways to reduce smoking prevalence. Key Points: Over one million adults in Los Angeles County smoke. Smoking causes one in every seven deaths in LA County – nearly 9,000 lives lost each year. The LA County Department of Public Health’s Tobacco Control and Prevention Program – Project TRUST (Tobacco Reduction Using Effective Strategies and Teamwork) – aims to reduce smoking prevalence by implementing evidence-based policies that promote cessation and smoke-free environments. LA County has been an innovator in the field, starting with LA Quits! a grassroots approach that used a multi-prong strategy with a variety of community partners, including mental health peer tobacco counselors, pharmacies and faith-based organizations. In 2009 the LA Pioneers for Smoking Cessation continued the groundbreaking work of LA Quits! by engaging 75 additional community partners[G1]. Educational Experience: Attendees will learn about implementing evidence-based policies that decrease smoking prevalence among behavioral health populations by hearing from key leaders. Each leader will present a different perspective on strategy and implementation, including effective technical assistance. Benefits: Attendees will gain a clear understanding of these initiatives, including effective strategies for grantees, and identify ways to forge new partnerships within their own communities. In addition, the presenters will discuss the basic design of the campaign and best practices. [G1]Are there any preliminary/interim results that you can add here re: success to date/number of quitters, etc?
