Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. They will be able to understand how to get their elected officials at the local level to create regulations to obtain smokefree air. Also how to rally local support for such legislation

Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Tobacco Control Movement – Skills Building and Tobacco Control Policies

Audience: Everybody interested in obtaining smokefree air. This would include staff and volunteers from the ACS,AHA.ALA as well as other organizations interested in creating laws for protection from tobacco contaminated air.

Key Points: How to organize and lead in convincing officials to create smokefree air legislation.

Current laws can be intreperted to be broader in scope than currently applied. Interaction with elected officials and their staffers can lead to more protective smokefree air laws.

Educational Experience: I will explain the tactics/ techniques we used to obtain our stronger laws and tell them how and whom to contact.

Benefits: They will be able to learn from our real world experience and carry these tactics/techniques over into their cities and counties.
