Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. identify benefits of providing cessation services to inpatients and can apply the lessons learned by FirstHealth to the development of cessation services at their own hospital.

Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Cessation

 Audience:

Professionals working in tobacco cessation and medical/allied-health professionals working in a hospital.

 Key Points:

Hospitalization may increase tobacco users’ motivation to quit and confidence that they can quit since they are tobacco-free during their hospital stay.  FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, a 395-bed, acute care, not-for-profit hospital, implemented an inpatient cessation program in 2010.  Providers order a consult for tobacco-using patients, and the patient will be visited by a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS).  The CTTS provides counseling and recommendations for nicotine replacement therapy along with referrals to the hospital’s outpatient cessation program, FirstQuit, and to the NC Quitline.  If needed, a week supply of nicotine patches will be authorized by the CTTS so the patients can continue use once they get home and until they are able to come to the FirstQuit office.  In addition, patients are mailed a letter after discharge reminding them of the available cessation resources.

By providing patients with cessation resources during their hospital stay, it is expected that patients would feel more empowered to remain tobacco-free once they go home.  To examine this hypothesis, patient survey data are being collected in order to determine the impact of inpatient cessation counseling on quit attempts.

 Educational Experience:

By attending the presentation, audience members will have a better understanding of the benefits of providing cessation services to inpatients and how FirstHealth has implemented a cessation program.

 Benefits:

The audience can apply the lessons learned by FirstHealth to the development of cessation services at their own hospital.
