Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe how emerging promising practices are being used in Latino communities nationwide and in Puerto Rico.

Cross Cutting Program Area(s): Tobacco Control Policies and Increasing Diversity/Eliminating Disparities

Audience: Individuals at all levels of tobacco control experience from a community or state can utilize these promising practices, particularly, those states with large Latino populations, faith communities, those working with youth, smoke free housing, smoke free businesses, smoke free parks and beaches, and LGBT Latinos.

Key Points: The National Latino Tobacco Control Network (NLTCN) has cooperative agreements with CDC to work around the country in order to reach Latino population. NLTCN has been gathering and collecting information through personal experience, questionnaire and personal conversation in developing these promising practices.
- Present 10 examples of how communities are engaging Latinos in tobacco control.
- Present on how to move from educational efforts into private and public policy at the local and state levels.
- Present the importance of expanding the tobacco control movement into the faith communities, the soccer fields and Latino businesses.
- Present how data collection in LGBT communities can be a vehicle for changing tobacco policies in Puerto Rico

Educational Experience: Audience will learn the key points from presentations with discussions, examples and sample copies of materials and promising practices.

Benefits: Audience will learn about different promising practices that are currently being utilized in establishing tobacco control policies using a variety of venues for Latino communities nationwide.
