Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. Participants will be able to summarize current tobacco control activities targeting low SES populations.Increase knowledge to the intergration of non-conventional interventions such as acupucture, self-hypnosis and progressive relaxation techniques usage as promising tools for cessation and healthy behavior changes as promising tools for smoking cessation targeting low SES popoulations. Participants will be able to list three ways to promote tobacco control policies development within African American communities.

Audience: Health Practitioners such as; tobacco training specialist, medical staff, peer supporters, advocates for tobacco-free living, policy-makers and others that provide direct health services in treatment, quitting tobacco use dependence (cessation) held in a community-based, hospital, health clinic and in a workforce setting.

Key Points: To achieve health equity, prevent and/or reduce tobacco related disparities, and improve health outcomes especially among low-socioeconomic status African American men, it is important to educate targeted population to indicators as related to socioeconomic inequities in healthcare.

Individual behavior plays a leading role in health outcomes. It is of essence to incorporate a holistic-based, comprehensive client-centered cessation training program that integrates: best practices in treatment, quitting tobacco use dependence; personalized quit/life plan; health screenings; individual and/or group services, coaching and healthy lifestyle and life course trainings. This agenda should further allow an opportunity for an option in treatment plans to include conventional and/or non-conventional strategies to aim to achieve and maintain healthy behaviors.

Educational Experience:

The audience will learn key points from a power-point presentation, hand-outs and/or poster presentation note cards and also by visiting the “Butt Out web-site.

 Benefits: As a cessation strategy, audience will learn healthy lifestyle (stress management, physical activity, routine screening and healthy nutrition) interventions to assist clients in adopting healthy behaviors.

 Raise awareness to current, available and state-of-the art non-conventional therapies available for use in tobacco cessation services.
