Audience:   Integrated Tobacco Treatment for Women with Addiction and Trauma Histories is targeted toward persons working in addiction and mental health treatment settings or other healthcare settings that address addiction.  Persons in clinical or administrative roles will benefit from hearing about the program model and implementation strategies.

Key Points :  Intensive tobacco treatment is a necessary service within alcohol and drug treatment programs based on extensive research and knowledge gained from the field.  However, programs are still slow to integrate the treatment of this addiction.  Research indicates resource barriers, lack of knowledge about nicotine dependence and treatment, and long-standing myths about concurrent treatment of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs are to blame.  This presentation will share the nationally-recognized program at Amethyst, Inc., a long-term addiction, trauma and mental health treatment facility for women.  Amethyst received the 2008 SAMHSA Science to Service Award for its Integrated Tobacco Treatment Program.  Program elements, including administrative and clinical considerations will be shared.

Educational Experience:  Dr. Hammond led the implementation of this program over six years ago and has been the clinical supervisor for these services.  She will share relevant research from the field, as well as practical experience from her program.  The audience will walk away from this presentation with a concise overview of considerations for implementation and additional resources.  Questions and discussion will be entertained throughout the presentation.

Benefits:   Audience members will benefit from the discussion about implementing evidence-based practices, staff and client engagement and lessons learned directly from the expert in the field.
