29 Relationship between smoking restrictions at home and increased Cessation intention

Audience: All of the experts in tobacco fields. Key Points: Family, as a fundamental social institution, has critical influence on its members. On the other hand, tobacco smoking is viewed as a serious social harm to individuals and families, which can impose economical and health burdens on families. This study aimed at evaluating the relationship between smoking at home and the intention to quit smoking. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 2020 smokers were randomly selected out of the main 20 regions of Tehran Municipality. The subjects were then interviewed by trained interviewers. In addition to the demographic characteristics, age of cigarette smoking onset, number of cigarettes consumed daily, price of cigarettes, history of quit smoking, current intention to quit smoking, waterpipe use, and knowledge of anti-tobacco laws were questioned. The obtained data were analyzed by SPSS software v.17. Educational Experience: Out of 2020 (1951 males and 69 females) smokers, 673 (33.3%) had used tobacco products at home, 355 (52.7%) expressed their intention to quit smoking. While out of 1330 (65.8%) smokers who did not smoke at home, 834 (62.7%) showed their intention to quit smoking. This study showed that there is a significant relationship between smoke-free homes and increase in smokers’ intention to quit smoking.
