Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. Find ways in which they can make it easy for a decision maker to say “yes” to proposed public policies.
  2. Discover a starting place for organizing a campaign to change public policy or to teach advocacy and strategic thinking.

Audience: Tobacco control advocates at local and state levels

Key Points: The fundamental nature of community organizing is making it easy for a policy maker to say “yes” to a proposed policy.  As advocates, making that happen is our job.  We are the ones asking for a change and for the public and businesses to operate differently.  Therefore, the burden is on us to make it easy for decision makers to say yes.  We will identify proven techniques in an organized campaign to build the 3 “P’s”: Power, Persuasion, and Pressure for smokefree and other tobacco policy campaigns. This interactive participatory workshop will be a guided brainstorming session on just how to make this happen.

Educational Experience: Participants will learn how to use the technique of “Powermapping” to strategically plan a campaign directed toward specific policy makers and other decision makers.  Examples from previous smokefree and other tobacco policy campaigns will be shared.

Benefits: At the end of this high-energy session, participants will be able to design multiple activities relevant to their community that apply persuasion and pressure tactics toward decision makers thereby making it easy for them to say “yes” to a proposed tobacco control policy.
