Key Points:
Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death and disease in the United States. Cigarette smoking causes approximately 443,000 deaths each year.
Healthy People 2020 provides a science-based, 10-year national objectives for promoting health and preventing disease. The Tobacco Use chapter aims to reduce illness, disability, and death related to tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure. The Healthy People 2020 Tobacco Use chapter contains 20 objectives organized into 3 key areas: Tobacco Use Prevalence, Health System Changes, Social and Environmental Changes.
Healthy People 2020 contains 42 topic areas, nearly 600 objectives, which encompass 1,200 measures. A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, called Leading Health Indicators, has been selected to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them. Three objectives from the tobacco chapter were chosen as Leading Health Indicators.
