Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe a group counseling smoking cessation program. Identify the challenges of smoking cessation programs offered in worksite and low-income housing units. List the benefits of providing smoking cessation at the worksite and in housing units.

Audience: This presentation will benefit those with some experience in tobacco control or program implementation. Attendees should have some background in how to work with diverse audiences and be familiar with the basics of smoking cessation. They should have an interest in outreach cessation. Key Points: The presenter will discuss advantages and disadvantages of group counseling for smoking cessation. Experiences with low-income housing residents and low-income workers will be described with respect to participation in cessation counseling, group dynamics, and quit rates. The presentation will compare and contrast the nature of the support in the worksite versus that in the housing units. Formal analysis of survey results will be used as evidence to support the statements made during the presentation. A professional data analyst is the source of the results that will be discussed. Educational Experience: The audience will learn by seeing the data depicted in charts, by hearing the stories that accompany the data, and by asking questions. The participants will be able to compare this type of smoking cessation program with other programs they are familiar with and will have access to a number of tools including an intake form and a readiness screener. Benefits: The presenter will provide information for healthcare settings, health departments, and other agencies to initiate smoking cessation outreach in applicable settings. Details of the program will be explained including cessation coach training, activities to promote cessation in both the worksite and housing settings, and developing a relationship with worksites and housing authorities.
